WRITING IN THE SAND SPREAD

For bygone eras, chapters of our lives that once were and are no longer. What you write today can be erased tomorrow, even if moments are fleeting they can still leave lasting impressions. This is a spread for use with cards or any other divination.

MARSEILLE TAROT PLAYING CARDS

This project excites me. So much in fact that I needed to write about it. Ryan Edward of Inset Cards and Curiosities is bringing something major to the table of cartomancy: a fusion of playing cards and the Marseilles Tarot. The two are often read much the same way you'd read tarot, but there is a whole other school of learning that treats these pip cards as a system. The Hedgewytch Method, or cunning folk system is the one I practice... I practice the the Playing Card Oracles system by Ana Cortez, but that's a story for another day.

It is said that this deck will be published in a limited, hand-painted edition this coming May. The mass market edition is said to come in 2018. That's quite a wait! But for now, these beautiful photos can hold us over. I found out about this deck through Camelia Elias' blog Taroflexions. She teaches us how to read tarot like the devil, and I love her books and blog.

Do you love cards as well? The slight bend of the paper and how crunchy it feels when you shuffle the cards. The sound of the paper as you riffle shuffle. The familiar faces looking back out at you, or conversing among themselves. The play of light and shadow caused by the environment and by the reflection of other objects placed on the table. The reflections of light on the table.

The mirror that reflects your insides as well as what happens outside of you.

I love cards. I love them madly. Interacting with them and offering my services sprinkles purpose into my life.

I appreciate the process work as it is depicted in the photo. There is great care put into the little details, and that's something that I'm very passionate about in my interactions with cards. It is precisely those little details that end up suggesting nuances in readings. It's the most rewarding thing!

Even though the launch date is still a while away, I am really looking forward for this deck to come out. Sometimes it's the little details that grasp us.

I appreciate that these cards seem to be hand painted and hand lettered. Analog illustrations retain nuances in strokes that I haven't been able to replicate with digital tools. The color washes are very appealing. I can't wait until this deck is published! The modernized woodblock style is one that appeals directly to my interests. I always prefer the vintage to the current. The nostalgia of those times that have passed graces me with a profound appreciation for these aged trinkets. And then there is the notion of aging it all on your own, through use and mutual experiences.

Preorders are scheduled to start next week at some point, fingers crossed. Until then, I am dreaming of this deck. This hybrid was a necessary missing link, and now that there is this variety accessible, we can do anything.

Perhaps I will even be motivated to pick up a drafting pencil and work on my own deck. Its been on and off for years, and despite my best effort I can't seem to get it to work. But for now, there are ther cards to read. More embodiment to concepts sparked by the love of cartomancy and tarot.

These photos are compliments of Ryan Edward's social media pages. View his Instagram, Inset shop and Twitter. I hope that you have enjoyed being introduced to these cards as much as I did. They're beautiful cards!

HELLO WITCHES Nº119

Hello Witches,
Last week was centered around the diligence of getting a new apartment and organizing my budget to make sure I'll be okay. It was really centered around the suit of Coins, which really impressed me. When it comes to reading with cards, there are no accidents. If there is room for error, perhaps it is in the shuffle — and even then...— or in the way the cards are interpreted. It's so important to ground yourself into the mindset of the reading. The rest is magic!

This week I realized the suit of Diamonds is contracting into itself. We start with the 3, going into the 2 and then back into the Ace. These cards have been shuffled thoroughly already, the deck is not new. Nice!

Monday: Ten of Hearts.
Allegra. Romance, passion and taking risks. Allowing the heart to guide and be the compass of fate. When we let our hearts guide us, we become vulnerable. We’re taking really big risks. It’s okay to be impulsive, but remember to protect yourself.

Tuesday. Seven of Diamonds.
Sword of Truth. Imparting your wisdom on others. Acting with prudence and with common sense or logic. Cutting through lies by not having time for them and always speaking with clarity. When you leave little room for misinterpretation, all parts are agreed.

Wednesday. Queen of Clovers.
Leah. Being imaginative, letting intuition bring forth ideas. Manifesting things into being that you’ve only dreamed of before. Following your intuition wherever it may lead.

Thursday. Three of Diamonds.
The Necklace. Amassing finances, making more money or increasing the tasks completed. A string of events that can bring with it opportunities or obstacles. Expressing yourself creatively through your work.

Friday. Two of Diamonds.
The Rivals. Opposites within the same space, competing for attention or for authority. A dynamic or financial relationship. If you are not careful, those differences can bring friction and arguments to your life, simply because you think and live differently.

Saturday. Ace of Diamonds.
Ignita. Cultivating and nurturing a strong sense of self. Looking out for yourself. Money gained. A gift coming in.

Sunday. King of Spades.
Mardoc. He’s a stubborn, skeptical man that just wants to lie in his quarters. He’s cold and unforgiving, and can even be resentful. Stay away, he looks like trouble.

What to avoid. Queen of Spades.
Morgana. Avoid being your favorite card. [Laugh] Try not to be cold, try not to alienate or isolate yourself. Being independent is a wonderful thing, but it can also leave you feeling like an outcast.

What to Strive for. Six of Diamonds.
The Tower. Look forward to that new apartment!!! [Laugh] Foresight, seeing things and preparing for them. Having the advantage, working your way up to something better. Always have a plan, and a backup plan too.
These playing cards are so stunning.

HELLO WITCHES Nº111

This week is so spade heavy! Wow! As you can probably tell, this is not a tarot deck. I have begun my voyage in cartomancy to expand my skills as an expert with the cards. I have embraced a whole new way to work with the cards, and look forward to sharing with you.
Spades are the element of Earth. They represent the direction of the North and they are the heaviest of the suits. They represent labor, career, housing, the physical body, discipline, and responsibility.

Clutters of Spades represent conflicts, clash, and hard sports in your life. Feeling trapped or boxed in. It says in the Playing Card Oracles book that they represent difficulties and challenges within the deck. They address tough issues that must be dealt with in real terms.

Wow, these cards can really sing. I can’t wait to do demonstrations for this blog on how to read with this deck properly. A review is coming soon as well!

The concepts in this post are actually mostly paraphrased and some even taken directly from the Playing Card Orales book by Ana Cortez. While I use intuition to read them, I am still studying this system and credit the book fully for the information presented here. The intellectual property belongs to Ana Cortez and her father, CJ Freeman.

♡ Monday. 11. Dango.
Someone could be manifesting in your life as a diva, looking for attention and their own self-interested agenda. They will be daring under any circumstance, and won’t resist to do something risky for an audience. It feels like it could be manifesting an irresponsible tendency. To me it seems like pushing limits and boundaries that have been established.

♡ Tuesday. 5♠. Circle of Crows.

Feeling trapped or ganged up on because of circumstances. What’s the way out? Hard to tell. It can feel like being at a crossroads without not one road being more promising than the other. It shows uncertainty, frustration and lack of satisfaction. It also depicts you feeling like the victim.

♡ Wednesday. 4♠. North Wind.
A strong, unsettling energy. Motivations that might go against you. Need to seek protection from powerful forces. I feel like it’s deep and can lead to problems if you let it.

♡ Thursday. A♠. Terra Incognita.
An ending that will pave the way for a new beginning. This card means death, loss and is the heaviest of the Aces. It means something concealed, stands for secrets. It also stands for change and the possibility of regeneration. You can’t resist changes, sometimes you just have to go with them.

♡ Friday. 3♠. The Grave.
Time to let go. Burying the things from the past that no longer serve you. A burden being carried.

What are you carrying that you can let go of? Unburden your shoulders, give yourself a chance to lay something to rest even though you clearly don’t want to. Loss is painful.

♡ Saturday. 8. The Garden.
The Garden. Labor of love. Supporting others with selflessness. Temptation. Beauty and charm.

Things that attract us can be very delicate, so we need to treat them with respect. When you see something that you admire, respect it. Learn when not to touch.

♡ Sunday. 9. Gilles de Rais.
Extreme emotions that can overwhelm. Vulnerability. Compulsion. Sorrow that flows. Compassion. Selfless caring.

When we open up our hearts to others, we become very vulnerable at the same time. We let others see parts of us that are hard for us to show them. With our soul exposed, we have nowhere to hide. It can lead us to extreme manifestations of emotion when we are hurt, because we can be easily hurt when we really invest ourselves in something.

♡ What to avoid. 9♠. Throne of Spiders.
Try not to work yourself to the bone. Overworking yourself is not taking care of yourself. Energy drain. A heavy burden. Co-dependence. Bad company. Need to let go. Peers leading you in a poor direction.

Predatory cards like this seem like warnings to me. On one hand, it could be working your hands off. Working yourself to exhaustion. I feel like on the flip side it could be someone that wants to take something from you and that could really harm you.

♡ What to strive for. 2♠. The Enemies.
Separate one fact from another when you don’t agree. If you are prone to arguments, let it happen because it is a natural thing. Sometimes you just can’t oppose nature, you have to clash with it.

Isn’t this deck beautiful? I can't wait to share more with you!
